Yeah, I think that's what we're in the process of learning the hard way as well. I'm not really sure what safeguards we can put in place to prevent propaganda and prejudice from overtaking information and skeptical reasoning.
Actually the nomination of Romney suggest that democracy might have operational limits. That a population must have a minimum level of intelligence, education, and freedom from indoctirnation so that they are capable of recognizing which candidates are representative... and which are not.
If people are too uneducated or too indoctrinatated by Fox, then you're only going through the motions
@RFlagg if you want to adopt my title and embed, I'm happy to let you have the credit, but otherwise I think they're different enough to leave them separate.
@Yogi, Obama is saying he supports gay marriage -- that's a good thing, right? Is there some reason you feel compelled to fling mud at him, even when he's just done something historic that will advance a civil rights cause you supposedly support?
To me, that looks like you're trying to step on a positive story to try to minimize any bump in his popularity, because you're worried it'll make him harder to defeat when he's up for election.
I think it's sweet that you say you care about issues and stuff, but do you really advance any sort of cause by trying to make the War on Terror into something that's all Obama's fault? By trying to make the bad economy all Obama's fault? You think you have some sort of shot at electing someone better than Obama in November?
I understand why Republicans and Libertarians talk like that, but what's your deal? You think you're saving the world from Obama's reign of gay pride terror?
People in the press liked McCain, and had this preconceived notion of him being some sort of independent "maverick". Since Republicans don't really tolerate independent thought, he had to work really hard to convince them that he was done being independent and would be a hardline conservative, and in the process turned himself into a laughingstock.
Mitt Romney seems to have been hated by basically everyone, seems to have zero personal charisma, is completely out of touch with how normal people live their lives, and it's virtually impossible to find an issue on which Romney hasn't been on both sides of during his political career. It's not really a surprise that he's a joke right out of the gate.
If Romney wins, it'll be a signal to the rest of the world that America is either no longer a democracy, or is now so completely overrun with people who have no grasp on reality that it probably shouldn't exist anymore.
And I honestly think there's a 40% chance Romney will win, because there's an awful lot of people with no grasp on reality here...
Also, the woman who said "Philippines" would've been right if the question had been asked 80 years ago. The girl who said "Louisiana" would've been right if the question had been asked 200 years ago. >> ^Yogi:
I got everything but US Territory...isn't that just a state or something? What do they mean by Territory?
I love how every time Obama does something good, a bunch of people who supposedly agree with what he's doing show up to take a dump on his chest for not having done more.
It's a historic moment, and y'all are pissed because he didn't do it sooner/more vociferously/in a dress to the tune of It's Rainin' Men.
Short version: you have to limit your study to only the impact of the most progressive tax in existence (the federal income tax) in order to come away thinking poor people are somehow getting off the hook more than rich people when it comes to taxes.

How Did Mitt Romney Get So Obscenely Rich?
